AFC Bournemouth, commonly known as "The Cherries," is a professional football club located in Bournemouth, England. The club was founded in 1890 as Boscombe FC and has undergone several name changes throughout its history. In 1923, it merged with Bournemouth & District Football Club to become Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic, and in 1971, it adopted its current name, AFC Bournemouth. The nickname "The Cherries" originates from the cherry trees that are abundant in the area, and the club's colors are red and black, which have become iconic in English football.AFC Bournemouth has a storied history that reflects both triumphs and challenges. Initially competing in regional leagues, the club was elected to the Football League in 1923. For decades, they primarily played in the lower divisions of English football, often struggling to maintain their status. The club's first significant achievement came in 1946 when they won the Third Division (South) Cup. However, it wasn't until the late 20th century that Bournemouth began to establish itself more firmly within the league system. The club enjoyed a notable period of success under manager Harry Redknapp in the 1980s. During this time, they recorded a famous FA Cup victory over Manchester United in January 1984 and won the Associate Members' Cup in its inaugural season. In 1987, Bournemouth achieved promotion to the Second Division for the first time in their history. Despite these successes, financial difficulties plagued the club, leading to relegation and administration issues in the late 1990s and early 2000s.A significant turnaround occurred when Eddie Howe was appointed manager in 2008. Under his leadership, AFC Bournemouth experienced an extraordinary rise through the divisions. The club gained promotion from League Two as runners-up in 2010 and followed this with another promotion from League One in 2013. The pinnacle of their achievements came in the 2014-2015 season when they secured the Championship title and earned promotion to the Premier League for the first time.Bournemouth's time in the Premier League has been marked by resilience and determination. They managed to maintain their top-flight status for five seasons before facing relegation in 2020. However, demonstrating their tenacity, they returned to the Premier League as Championship runners-up in 2022 under Scott Parker's management.
