AS Monaco FC, commonly known as Monaco, is a professional football club based in the Principality of Monaco. Founded on August 1, 1919, through the merger of several local clubs, Monaco has established itself as one of the most successful teams in French football history. The club's colors are red and white, and they play their home matches at the iconic Stade Louis II, which has been their home since 1939.
Monaco's journey in professional football began with a rocky start, facing relegation shortly after turning professional in 1933. However, the club found its footing and achieved promotion to Ligue 1 for the first time in 1953. Under the management of Lucien Leduc, Monaco captured its first major trophy in 1960 by winning the Coupe de France. This success was followed by their first Ligue 1 title in 1961 and a historic double in 1963 when they won both the league and cup.
The late 20th century saw Monaco experience further successes, particularly under the management of Arsène Wenger in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Wenger introduced a focus on youth development that produced stars like Thierry Henry and Emmanuel Petit. During this period, Monaco won multiple league titles and consistently competed in European tournaments. The club's prominence continued with additional Ligue 1 titles in 1997 and 2000, along with a remarkable run to the UEFA Champions League final in 2004, where they ultimately fell to FC Porto.
Despite these successes, Monaco faced financial difficulties that led to relegation in the early 2010s. However, a turnaround began when Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev acquired the club in 2011. His investment revitalized Monaco, allowing them to return to Ligue 1 and compete for domestic titles once again. The club has since attracted high-profile players such as Radamel Falcao and Kylian Mbappé, further solidifying their status in both French and European football.
In recent years, Monaco has been known for its attacking style of play and has consistently challenged for Ligue 1 titles.
