Associazione Sportiva Roma, commonly known as Roma, is a professional football club based in Rome, Italy. The club was founded in 1927 through a merger of three existing Roman clubs, with the aim of creating a strong team to represent the Italian capital. Roma plays its home matches at the Stadio Olimpico, which they share with city rivals Lazio, creating one of the most intense derby rivalries in Italian football.
Roma's colors are carmine red and golden yellow, representing the traditional colors of Rome. The club's crest features a wolf suckling Romulus and Remus, a nod to the mythical founding of Rome. The team is often referred to as "I Giallorossi" (The Yellow and Reds) or "La Magica" (The Magic One).
Throughout its history, Roma has been a consistent presence in Serie A, Italy's top football division, with only one season spent in Serie B. The club has won three Serie A titles, with their first coming in 1941-42, followed by triumphs in 1982-83 and 2000-01. They have also claimed nine Coppa Italia trophies and two Supercoppa Italiana titles. In European competitions, Roma's most notable achievement was winning the inaugural UEFA Conference League in 2022, adding to their earlier success in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1961.
Roma has been home to many legendary players over the years, but none more iconic than Francesco Totti. Known as "Il Capitano" and "The Eighth King of Rome," Totti spent his entire 25-year professional career with Roma, becoming the club's all-time leading goalscorer and appearance maker. Other notable players in Roma's history include Daniele De Rossi, Bruno Conti, and Giuseppe Giannini.
The club has experienced periods of success interspersed with challenges. The 1980s were particularly fruitful under the management of Nils Liedholm, culminating in the 1983 Scudetto. The early 2000s saw another high point with the 2001 league title under Fabio Capello. In recent years, Roma has consistently finished in the top positions of Serie A and has been a regular participant in European competitions.
Under the ownership of the Friedkin Group since 2020, Roma has shown ambition to return to the pinnacle of Italian and European football. The appointment of José Mourinho as manager in 2021 signaled this intent, leading to their Conference League triumph.
