Accrington Stanley F.C. is a professional football club based in Accrington, Lancashire, competing in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. The club is often simply referred to as "Stanley" and has a rich history that dates back to its original formation in 1891. Known for their red and white colors, Accrington Stanley plays its home matches at the Wham Stadium, which has a capacity of approximately 5,450 spectators.
The club's early history was marked by success in the Football League, where it played from 1921 until 1962. However, financial difficulties plagued the original Accrington Stanley, leading to its resignation from the league mid-season in March 1962. The club went into liquidation in 1966, leaving a significant gap in local football.
In 1968, a new club was formed by local supporters at a meeting held at Bold Street Working Men's Club. This reformed Accrington Stanley began its journey in the Lancashire Combination, gradually working its way back up through the ranks of English football. The club enjoyed early successes in the Lancashire Combination and later moved to the Cheshire County League.
The late 1990s marked a turning point for Accrington Stanley when John Coleman was appointed manager. Under his leadership, the club experienced a resurgence, winning multiple promotions and returning to the Football League in 2006 after a 44-year absence. This achievement was celebrated as a significant milestone for both the club and its dedicated fanbase.
Accrington Stanley gained national prominence in 1989 due to a memorable advertisement by the Milk Marketing Board featuring the slogan "Accrington Stanley, who are they?" This catchy phrase helped raise awareness of the club and solidified its place in popular culture.
The club's rise through the divisions continued with notable achievements, including winning the Conference National title in 2006. Since then, Accrington Stanley has spent several seasons competing in League Two, often finishing in mid-table but occasionally challenging for promotion.
The club is known for its strong community ties and supporter involvement. Local businessman Andy Holt became chairman in 2015 and has played a crucial role in stabilizing the club's finances while improving facilities at Wham Stadium. Accrington Stanley's biggest rivals include Morecambe, Barrow and Rochdale.
