BSC Young Boys, commonly known as Young Boys or simply YB, is a professional football club based in Bern, Switzerland, that competes in the Swiss Super League. Founded in 1898, Young Boys has established itself as one of the most successful and popular clubs in Swiss football history.
The club plays its home matches at the Stadion Wankdorf, a modern 31,120-capacity stadium that opened in 2005, replacing the old Wankdorf Stadium, which had been the club's home since 1925 and famously hosted the 1954 FIFA World Cup Final. The new stadium, with its distinctive yellow seats reflecting the club's colors, provides an excellent atmosphere for both domestic and European matches.
Young Boys' colors are yellow and black, which have earned them the nickname "Die Gelb-Schwarzen" (The Yellow-Blacks). These colors are prominently featured in their home kit and have become synonymous with the club's identity.
Throughout their history, Young Boys have won 15 Swiss league titles and seven Swiss Cups, making them one of the most successful clubs in Swiss football. Their first major success came in 1903 when they won their inaugural Swiss championship. The club experienced a golden era in the 1950s and early 1960s, winning four consecutive league titles from 1957 to 1960 and adding two more in 1963 and 1966.
After this period of dominance, Young Boys experienced a lengthy title drought, not winning the league again until 2018. However, this victory marked the beginning of a new era of success for the club. Under the management of Adi Hütter and later Gerardo Seoane, Young Boys won four consecutive Swiss Super League titles from 2018 to 2021, re-establishing themselves as the dominant force in Swiss football.
In European competitions, Young Boys have made significant strides in recent years. They qualified for the UEFA Champions League group stage for the first time in their history in the 2018-19 season, and have since become regular participants in European competitions. Their most notable European achievement came in the 2020-21 season when they reached the Round of 16 in the UEFA Europa League.
The club has a large and passionate fan base, not just in Bern but across Switzerland. The Stadion Wankdorf is known for its electric atmosphere, particularly during important matches and European nights. The "Ostkurve" is famous for its impressive choreographies and unwavering support. Young Boys has a strong rivalry with FC Basel, with matches between the two teams often being crucial in deciding the outcome of the Swiss Super League.
