Barrow Association Football Club is a professional football club based in Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, competing in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. Founded in 1901, Barrow began its journey in the Lancashire League before joining the Lancashire Combination in 1903. The club has played its home games at Holker Street since 1909, a venue that has become synonymous with its identity.
Initially, Barrow experienced modest success, winning the Lancashire Combination title in the 1920-21 season. This achievement led to their invitation to join the newly formed Third Division North of the Football League for the 1921-22 season. Throughout their early years in the Football League, Barrow struggled to make a significant impact, often finishing in the lower half of the table. Their highest league finish before World War II was fifth place in the 1931-32 season.
The post-war years saw Barrow remain in the lowest tier of the Football League, and they became founding members of Division Four when it was established in 1958. The club's fortunes fluctuated during this period, with notable highs including a third-place finish in the Fourth Division during the 1966-67 season, which secured promotion to the Third Division. However, this success was short-lived; Barrow faced relegation just two years later and struggled to regain their status.
By the end of the 1971-72 season, Barrow's financial difficulties and poor performances culminated in their exit from the Football League after a re-election vote. This marked the beginning of a long period spent in non-league football, where they faced numerous challenges, including relegations and financial instability. Despite these setbacks, Barrow managed to win several Northern Premier League titles and achieved their first national silverware by winning the FA Trophy in 1990.
The club's fortunes took another turn when they were expelled from the Conference due to financial mismanagement in 1999. After several years of rebuilding and competing at lower levels, Barrow won the Conference North title during the 2014-15 season. This victory allowed them to return to the National League and ultimately led to their promotion back to the Football League after a 48-year absence when they finished top of the National League table during the 2019-20 season. The rivalry with nearby clubs like Morecambe adds an extra layer of excitement to their matches.
