The Burkina Faso national football team, nicknamed Les Étalons (The Stallions), represents Burkina Faso in international football matches. It is governed by the Burkinabé Football Federation and is a member of FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF). The team's colors are green and red, reflecting the colors of the Burkinabé flag.
Since their first international match in 1960, when the country was known as Upper Volta, Burkina Faso has made significant strides in African football. They have qualified for the Africa Cup of Nations 13 times, with their best performance coming in 2013 when they finished as runners-up. The team also reached the semi-finals in 1998 when they hosted the tournament, and again in 2017, securing third place.
Burkina Faso has yet to qualify for a FIFA World Cup, but they have come close on several occasions. Their most notable attempt was during the 2014 World Cup qualifications, where they reached the final round but narrowly missed out on qualification due to the away goals rule against Algeria.
The team's highest FIFA ranking was 35th, achieved in April and May 2017. As of October 2024, they are ranked 62nd. Burkina Faso plays its home matches at the Stade du 4-Août in Ouagadougou.
Throughout their history, Burkina Faso has produced several notable players. Charles Kaboré holds the record for most caps with 102 appearances, while Moumouni Dagano is the top scorer with 34 goals. Current captain Bertrand Traoré is among the team's key players.
Under the management of Brama Traoré, Burkina Faso continues to strive for success on both the continental and global stages. They are currently participating in the qualifications for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, aiming to build on their past achievements and establish themselves as a consistent force in African football.
