Italian football team.
Cagliari Calcio, commonly referred to as Cagliari, is a professional football club based in Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy. Founded in 1920, the club plays its home games at the Unipol Domus, which has a capacity of 16,233 spectators. Cagliari's colors are blue and red, and they are nicknamed "I Rossoblu" (The Red and Blues) or "Gli Isolani" (The Islanders), reflecting their Sardinian identity.
Cagliari's history is marked by periods of success interspersed with challenges. The club's golden era came in the late 1960s and early 1970s, culminating in their only Serie A title in the 1969-70 season. This remarkable achievement made Cagliari the first club from south of Rome to win the Scudetto, and it remains one of the most celebrated moments in the club's history.
The championship-winning team was led by the legendary Gigi Riva, who is not only Cagliari's all-time leading scorer but also the Italian national team's top goalscorer. Riva's contributions to Cagliari and Italian football have made him an iconic figure, with his number 11 shirt retired by the club in his honor.
Throughout its history, Cagliari has spent most of its seasons in Serie A, although they have also experienced periods in Serie B. The club has had several spells in European competitions, with their best performance coming in the 1993-94 UEFA Cup, where they reached the semi-finals before being eliminated by Inter Milan.
Cagliari has a strong tradition of developing young talent, particularly from Sardinia. Their youth academy has produced several players who have gone on to have successful careers in Serie A and internationally. Notable academy graduates include Barella, who became a key player for Inter Milan and the Italian national team. The club's biggest rivalry is with Sassari-based Torres, in what is known as the "Derby di Sardegna" (Sardinian Derby).
Cagliari's fan base is known for its passion and loyalty, with support extending across the entire island of Sardinia. The club plays a significant role in Sardinian culture and identity, often serving as a source of pride for the island's inhabitants. One of the most significant developments for Cagliari in recent years has been the ongoing saga regarding their stadium. The club moved from the historic Stadio Sant'Elia to the temporary Sardegna Arena (now Unipol Domus) in 2017, with plans for a new, modern stadium still in development.
