Chesterfield Football Club, commonly known as Chesterfield, is a professional football club based in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Established in 1867, it is one of the oldest clubs in the Football League and has a long and varied history. The club initially played under the name Chesterfield Town before becoming Chesterfield FC in 1920. They compete in League Two, the fourth tier of English football, and play their home matches at the Proact Stadium, which has a capacity of around 10,500.
Chesterfield's early years were marked by fluctuating fortunes. They joined the Football League in 1899 but faced challenges in maintaining their status. The club experienced relegation and promotion multiple times throughout the 20th century. One notable high point came during the 1996-97 season when they reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup, where they faced Middlesbrough. Despite a valiant effort, they were eliminated in a replay after a controversial decision during their initial match at Old Trafford.
Throughout their history, Chesterfield has often found itself in the lower tiers of English football. The club has been known for its resilience, bouncing back from relegations and financial difficulties. In the early 2000s, they faced significant challenges, including a period of financial instability that nearly led to the club's folding.
The late 2000s saw a brief resurgence as Chesterfield achieved promotion to League One after finishing as champions of League Two in the 2010-11 season. However, their stay in League One was short-lived, and they were relegated back to League Two just two seasons later.
Chesterfield's most recent struggles have included attempts to regain their footing in the Football League after experiencing further relegation. The club has seen various managerial changes and player turnover as it seeks to stabilize and improve its performance on the pitch. Chesterfield's biggest rivals are Mansfield Town and Derby County.
