Club Brugge KV is a professional football club based in Bruges, Belgium, competing in the Belgian Pro League. The club, commonly known as Club Brugge or simply Club, was founded in 1891 and has since become one of the most successful teams in Belgian football. Their home games are played at the Jan Breydel Stadium, which has a capacity of 29,472 spectators.
The club's colors are blue and black, earning them the nickname "Blauw-Zwart" (Blue-Black). Club Brugge has a rich history of success, having won 18 Belgian First Division titles, second only to Anderlecht in the country. They have also claimed 11 Belgian Cup victories and 17 Belgian Super Cup triumphs, making them one of the most decorated clubs in Belgium.
Club Brugge's first major success came in 1920 when they won their first Belgian championship. However, it wasn't until the 1970s that the club truly established itself as a powerhouse in Belgian football. Under the management of Austrian coach Ernst Happel, Club Brugge won three consecutive league titles from 1976 to 1978 and reached the final of the European Cup (now UEFA Champions League) in 1978, where they were defeated by Liverpool.
In European competitions, Club Brugge has been a regular participant, competing in the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and the now-defunct UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Their most notable European achievement came in 1976 when they reached the final of the UEFA Cup, losing to Liverpool over two legs.
The club has a strong rivalry with Cercle Brugge, with whom they share the Jan Breydel Stadium. This derby, known as the Bruges Derby, is one of the most intense in Belgian football. Club Brugge also maintains rivalries with other top Belgian clubs, particularly Anderlecht and Standard Liège.
In recent years, Club Brugge has continued to dominate Belgian football, winning five league titles between 2016 and 2022. They have also made significant strides in European competitions, regularly qualifying for the group stages of the UEFA Champions League and making deep runs in the UEFA Europa League.
