Coupe de France

French football tournament.

The Coupe de France, officially known as the French Cup, is the premier knockout football competition in France, organized by the French Football Federation (FFF). Established in 1917, it is open to all amateur and professional clubs across the country, including those from overseas territories. This inclusivity allows for a diverse range of teams to compete, making it a cherished event in French football.

The competition features a single-elimination format, with matches drawn at random for each round. If a match ends in a draw, it proceeds to penalties. Initially, replays were allowed; however, this format was abandoned in favor of extra time and penalties starting in 1969. The tournament has grown significantly over the years, with participation increasing from 48 clubs in its inaugural season to over 7,000 clubs today.

The final of the Coupe de France is traditionally held at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, where it has been celebrated since its opening in 1998. The final is attended by the President of France, who presents the trophy to the winning team’s captain. Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is the most successful club in the history of the competition, having won the title 15 times as of 2024. They are followed by Marseille with 10 titles and Saint-Étienne with six.

The Coupe de France is known for its dramatic moments and potential for "giant-killing," where lower-league teams can upset higher-ranked opponents. This aspect adds excitement and unpredictability to the tournament. In the 2023-24 season, PSG secured their latest title by defeating Lyon 2-1 in a closely contested final.

The Coupe de France remains a highlight of French football culture, celebrated for its rich history and ability to unite fans from all levels of the sport. Its unique format and tradition continue to inspire passion among players and supporters alike, making it one of the most prestigious domestic cup competitions in Europe.
