English football team.
Crewe Alexandra are a professional football club based in Crewe, Cheshire, who currently compete in League Two, the fourth tier of English football. The club is affectionately known as "The Railwaymen" or "The Alex," nicknames that reflect both the town's rich railway heritage and the club's formal name. Crewe Alexandra play their home games at Gresty Road, also known as The Mornflake Stadium for sponsorship reasons, which has been their home since 1906 and can accommodate just over 10,000 spectators.
Founded in 1877 as an offshoot of Crewe Alexandra Cricket Club, the football club took its name from Princess Alexandra of Denmark. Crewe Alexandra joined the Football League in 1892 as founding members of the Second Division but lost their league status after only four seasons. They regained their league position in 1921 when they were invited to join the newly formed Third Division North.
Throughout their history, Crewe Alexandra have primarily competed in the lower divisions of English football. However, they have achieved notable successes, including reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in 1888. The club's most successful period came under the long-term management of Dario Gradi, who served as manager from 1983 to 2007 and again from 2009 to 2011. Gradi's tenure saw Crewe Alexandra develop a reputation for nurturing young talent and playing attractive, attacking football.
Under Gradi's guidance, Crewe Alexandra achieved promotion to the First Division (now the Championship) in 1997, marking their first and only season in the second tier of English football. They also won the Football League Trophy in 2013, defeating Southend United in the final at Wembley Stadium.
Crewe Alexandra's greatest rivals are Port Vale, with whom they contest the A500 Derby. The rivalry is intense due to the close proximity of the two clubs, separated by just 12 miles. Matches between Crewe and Port Vale are always highly anticipated by fans of both teams.
The club is renowned for its youth academy, which has produced numerous players who have gone on to achieve success at higher levels. Notable academy graduates include former England internationals David Platt and Dean Ashton, as well as Danny Murphy, Rob Jones, and Nick Powell.
In recent years, Crewe Alexandra have faced challenges both on and off the pitch. They were relegated to League Two in 2016 and have struggled to mount a serious promotion challenge since. The club has also had to deal with the fallout from historical sexual abuse allegations, which came to light in 2016 and led to significant changes in the club's safeguarding policies.
