D.C. United is a professional soccer club based in Washington, D.C., competing in Major League Soccer (MLS) as a member of the Eastern Conference. Founded in 1995, D.C. United is one of the ten charter clubs of MLS and has established itself as one of the most successful teams in the league's history. The club plays its home games at Audi Field, a soccer-specific stadium with a capacity of 20,000, which opened in 2018.

D.C. United's colors are black and red, which are prominently featured in their home kit. The team's name and logo draw inspiration from European soccer traditions, reflecting the club's ambition to be a global brand while representing the nation's capital.

From its inception, D.C. United quickly established itself as a powerhouse in MLS. The club won the inaugural MLS Cup in 1996 and went on to dominate the early years of the league. Under the leadership of head coach Bruce Arena, D.C. United won three of the first four MLS Cup titles (1996, 1997, and 1999) and four Supporters' Shields (1997, 1999, 2006, and 2007) for the best regular-season record.

In addition to their domestic success, D.C. United has also achieved notable results in international competitions. The club won the CONCACAF Champions' Cup (now known as the CONCACAF Champions League) in 1998, becoming the first American team to do so. They also claimed the Copa Interamericana in 1998, defeating Brazilian side Vasco da Gama.

D.C. United's longest-standing rivalry is with the New York Red Bulls, known as the Atlantic Cup, which dates back to the league's inaugural season.
