EFL League Two

English football league.

The English Football League Two, officially known as Sky Bet League Two for sponsorship reasons, is the fourth tier of the English football league system and the lowest division in the English Football League (EFL). Founded in 2004 as a rebranding of the former Football League Third Division, it sits below EFL League One in the pyramid.

League Two consists of 24 teams, each playing 46 matches per season from August to May. The competition follows a standard format where each team plays every other team twice, once at home and once away. At the end of each season, the top three teams are automatically promoted to EFL League One, while the teams finishing fourth to seventh compete in play-offs for the final promotion spot. The bottom two teams are relegated to the National League.

The league has become one of the most-watched fourth-tier football leagues globally, with an average attendance of 4,602 spectators per game across all seasons since its restructuring in 2004. The highest average attendance was 6,274 in the 2023-24 season, with Bradford City achieving the highest individual club average of 17,967 in the 2022-23 season.

Several former Premier League clubs have competed in League Two, including Bradford City (1999-2001) and Swindon Town (1993-94). As of the 2024-25 season, Newport County holds the longest tenure in this division, having been promoted in the 2012-13 season.

The promotion and relegation system ensures a dynamic league environment, with clubs striving to secure promotion to League One or avoid relegation to the National League. The play-off final, typically held at Wembley Stadium, is a crucial match due to the financial implications of promotion.

League Two has produced many memorable moments and has been a crucial stepping stone for players and managers advancing their careers. The competition continues to play a vital role in the English football pyramid, offering clubs the opportunity to progress towards higher divisions while maintaining strong connections with their local communities.

Stockport County are the current champions, having won their first League Two title in the 2023-24 season.
