Everton Football Club, known as "The Toffees," is a professional football club based in Liverpool, playing in the English Premier League. Founded in 1878, the club originally started as St. Domingo FC, named after a local Methodist church. In 1879, the team changed its name to Everton and quickly established itself as a prominent force in English football. The first official match under the name Everton FC took place on December 20, 1879, against St. Peters, resulting in a resounding 6-0 victory.Initially, Everton played on an open pitch in Stanley Park before moving to Priory Road in 1882. However, as crowds grew, they relocated again to Anfield in 1884. This period saw Everton rise to prominence, becoming one of the founding members of the Football League in 1888. Their first major success came in 1891 when they won their first league title, solidifying their status as one of England’s top clubs.Despite their early successes, Everton faced challenges in the years that followed. The club experienced internal disputes regarding management and financial issues, leading to a split with John Houlding, who had been instrumental in their move to Anfield. This conflict resulted in Houlding establishing Liverpool FC in 1892 while Everton moved to Goodison Park, their current home since that same year.At Goodison Park, Everton continued to build on their legacy. They reached several FA Cup finals before World War I and won their first FA Cup title in 1906. The club's fortunes fluctuated over the years; however, they enjoyed remarkable success during the 1920s and 1930s under legendary striker Dixie Dean, who scored an astonishing 60 league goals in the 1927-28 season.The post-war era saw Everton reclaim their status as a top club, winning multiple league titles and FA Cups throughout the decades. The club's most successful period came under manager Howard Kendall during the mid-1980s when they won the league title twice and secured the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985.Everton has consistently been a competitive force in English football, spending only four years outside the top flight since its inception. They have won nine league titles and five FA Cups, along with one European trophy. The club is known for its passionate fanbase and fierce rivalry with Liverpool FC, which adds to the rich tapestry of its history.
