Shakhtar Donetsk is a professional football club based in Donetsk, Ukraine, although they have been playing their home games in other Ukrainian cities since 2014 due to the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. The club was founded in 1936 and is nicknamed "The Miners" due to the city's coal mining industry. Shakhtar's colors are orange and black, reflecting the colors of coal and fire.
Shakhtar plays its home games at the NSC Olimpiyskiy in Kyiv, having been forced to relocate from their former home, the Donbass Arena, due to the ongoing conflict in the Donbass region. The Donbass Arena, opened in 2009, was considered one of the most modern stadiums in Eastern Europe before its abandonment.
Throughout their history, Shakhtar has won 13 Ukrainian Premier League titles, 13 Ukrainian Cups, and 9 Ukrainian Super Cups. Their most significant European success came in 2009 when they won the UEFA Cup (now Europa League), defeating Werder Bremen in the final. This victory made them the first Ukrainian club to win a major European trophy since independence.
Shakhtar's rise to prominence began in the late 1990s under the ownership of billionaire Rinat Akhmetov. The club's strategy of blending Ukrainian talent with Brazilian flair became their trademark, with numerous Brazilian players making a significant impact at the club before moving on to top European leagues.
The club has a strong rivalry with Dynamo Kyiv, with their matches often deciding the Ukrainian Premier League title. These encounters, known as the Ukrainian Clasico, are among the most anticipated fixtures in Ukrainian football.
In European competitions, Shakhtar has become a regular participant in the UEFA Champions League, often progressing to the knockout stages. They have achieved notable results against some of Europe's biggest clubs, including victories over Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester City.
Since 2014, Shakhtar has faced unprecedented challenges due to the conflict in Eastern Ukraine. The club has shown remarkable resilience, continuing to compete at the highest level domestically and in Europe despite being unable to play in their home city. Under the long-term management of Mircea Lucescu and later Paulo Fonseca, Shakhtar developed a reputation for attractive, attacking football. This style of play has been maintained under current manager Roberto De Zerbi, who has continued the club's tradition of success despite the ongoing challenges.
