FC Utrecht is a professional football club based in Utrecht, Netherlands, competing in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football. Founded on July 1, 1970, through the merger of three local clubs—VV DOS, USV Elinkwijk, and Velox—the club has established itself as a significant force in Dutch football. FC Utrecht plays its home matches at Stadion Galgenwaard, which has a capacity of approximately 23,750 spectators.
Since its inception, FC Utrecht has enjoyed a stable presence in the Eredivisie, notably becoming the only club outside the traditional "Big Three" (Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, and Feyenoord) that has never been relegated from the top flight. The club's first season saw them finish in a respectable ninth place, setting a solid foundation for future campaigns. Over the years, FC Utrecht has consistently competed at a high level, achieving notable successes in both domestic and European competitions.
The club's early years were marked by steady growth and development. FC Utrecht secured its first major trophy by winning the KNVB Cup in 1985. This victory was pivotal as it not only marked the club's entry into the realm of silverware but also set the stage for future successes. In 2004, they also won the Johan Cruyff Shield, becoming the first club outside the traditional Big Three to do so.

The club has participated in 15 European campaigns, reaching the group stages of the UEFA Cup in the 2004-05 season and the UEFA Europa League in 2010-11. These performances have showcased FC Utrecht's ability to compete on an international stage, even if they have yet to secure a major European title.
Throughout its history, FC Utrecht has faced challenges typical of many clubs, including financial difficulties and management changes. The early 1980s were particularly tumultuous when financial mismanagement nearly led to bankruptcy. However, through community support and strategic leadership changes, the club managed to stabilize and eventually thrive again.
