Fleetwood Town are a professional football club based in Fleetwood, Lancashire, who currently compete in League One, the third tier of English football. The club, affectionately known as "The Cod Army," has a unique history that spans over a century, with multiple incarnations and a remarkable rise through the English football pyramid.
The original Fleetwood FC was founded in 1908 and enjoyed success in the Lancashire Combination, winning the league in 1923-24. However, financial difficulties led to the club's dissolution in 1976, marking the end of its first chapter. Undeterred by this setback, the club was re-established in 1977 as Fleetwood Town FC, embarking on a new journey in the Cheshire County League.
The club's resilience was tested once again when it faced financial troubles in the 1990s, leading to its folding in 1996. However, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, the club was reborn in 1997 as Fleetwood Wanderers, quickly changing its name to Fleetwood Freeport FC due to a sponsorship deal. In 2002, the club reclaimed its identity as Fleetwood Town FC, setting the stage for an unprecedented period of growth and success.
Fleetwood Town's home ground is Highbury Stadium, which has been their base since 1939. The stadium has undergone significant renovations and expansions over the years, now boasting a capacity of around 5,327 spectators. Interestingly, the ground once hosted speedway events, with the Fleetwood Flyers competing there in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
The club's modern era of success began in 2004 when local businessman Andy Pilley took over. Under his ownership, Fleetwood Town embarked on a remarkable journey through the English football pyramid. They won the North West Counties Football League First Division in 2005, followed by promotions from the Northern Premier League Division One in 2006 and the Northern Premier League Premier Division in 2008.
Fleetwood's ascent continued as they secured promotion to the Conference Premier (now National League) in 2010. Just two years later, in 2012, they achieved promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history, winning the Conference Premier. This meteoric rise was capped off in 2014 when they gained promotion to League One via the play-offs, completing a six-tier climb in just nine years.
While Fleetwood Town may not have the extensive silverware collection of some larger clubs, their achievements in recent years are no less impressive. They have won the Lancashire Senior Cup and reached the final of the Football League Trophy in 2016, narrowly losing to Barnsley on penalties.
Fleetwood Town's biggest rivals are generally considered to be nearby clubs such as Morecambe and Accrington Stanley.
