Getafe Club de Fútbol, commonly known as Getafe, is a professional football club based in Getafe, a city in the Madrid metropolitan area. Founded in 1983, Getafe is one of the younger clubs in Spanish professional football but has established itself as a regular presence in La Liga since their first promotion to the top flight in 2004.
The team plays its home matches at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez, named after the former Spanish international footballer, which has a capacity of just over 17,000. Getafe's colors are blue, and they are often referred to as "Azulones" (The Deep Blues). Despite being a relatively small club, Getafe has punched above its weight in Spanish football, often competing with and sometimes outperforming more established teams.
Getafe's rise through the Spanish football pyramid was rapid. After starting in the regional leagues, they achieved promotion to La Liga for the first time in 2004, just 21 years after the club's foundation. Since then, they have mostly maintained their top-flight status, with only brief spells in the Segunda División.
The club's most successful period came under the management of José Bordalás between 2016 and 2021. During this time, Getafe achieved their highest-ever La Liga finish (5th place in the 2018-19 season), which qualified them for the UEFA Europa League. In the 2019-20 Europa League, they reached the round of 16, their best performance in European competition.
While Getafe has not won any major trophies, they have come close on a couple of occasions. They reached the final of the Copa del Rey in 2007 and 2008, losing to Sevilla and Valencia respectively. These cup runs, along with their consistent performances in La Liga, have helped establish Getafe as a respected club in Spanish football.
As a club from the Madrid area, Getafe has natural rivalries with other teams from the region, particularly Leganés and Rayo Vallecano.
