The Ghana national football team, known as the Black Stars, represents Ghana in men's international football. It is governed by the Ghana Football Association, the governing body for football in Ghana. The team is a member of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and has a rich history in African football. The Black Stars are named after the Black Star of Africa, which is featured on the national flag.
Ghana qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time in 2006 and has since made four appearances, with their best result coming in 2010 when they reached the quarter-finals. The team has won the Africa Cup of Nations four times (1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982) and has finished as runners-up five times (1968, 1970, 1992, 2010, and 2015). They have also participated in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) four times, finishing as runners-up twice.
The Black Stars' highest FIFA ranking was 14th, achieved in April-May 2007 and February 2008. Their lowest ranking was 89th in June 2004. As of October 2024, they are ranked 73rd. The team plays its home matches at various stadiums across Ghana.
André Ayew holds the record for most caps with 120 appearances, while Asamoah Gyan is the top scorer with 51 goals. The team has had several notable achievements, including a historic run at the 2010 World Cup where they narrowly missed reaching the semi-finals after losing to Uruguay in a dramatic penalty shootout.
In recent years, Ghana has faced challenges in maintaining its status as a powerhouse in African football. They failed to progress beyond the group stage at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and were eliminated early from the qualifiers for the 2022 World Cup.
