Hellas Verona Football Club, commonly known as Verona, is a professional football club based in Verona, Italy. The club was founded in 1903 by a group of high school students and was named Hellas, the Greek word for Greece, at the request of a classics professor. Verona plays its home games at the Stadio Marc'Antonio Bentegodi, which has a capacity of 39,211 and has been their home since 1963. The team's colors are yellow and blue, earning them the nickname "Gialloblu" (Yellow-Blues).
Verona's history has been marked by periods of success interspersed with challenges. The club's most notable achievement came in the 1984-85 season when they won their first and only Serie A title, a remarkable feat for a provincial team. This triumph remains one of the most surprising in Italian football history and is fondly remembered by fans as the "Miracolo Verona" (Verona Miracle).
Throughout their history, Verona has oscillated between Serie A and Serie B. They first reached Serie A in 1957 but were immediately relegated. Their most stable period in the top flight was from 1968 to 1990, which included their championship-winning season. During this time, they also achieved success in European competitions, reaching the UEFA Cup quarter-finals in 1988.
Verona has a fierce rivalry with Chievo Verona, the other professional team from the city. Their matches are known as the "Derby della Scala," named after the Scaliger family who ruled Verona in the Middle Ages. This derby is unique as it pits a team from the city center (Hellas) against one from a small suburb (Chievo).
The club has faced financial difficulties at various points in its history. In 1991, they were relegated to Serie C1 due to financial irregularities, but they managed to climb back to Serie A by 1996. However, they were unable to maintain their top-flight status consistently and have since moved between Serie A and Serie B.
Verona has produced and nurtured several notable players throughout its history. Some of the most famous include Giuseppe Farina, who was part of the 1984-85 title-winning team, and Antonio Di Natale, who began his career at Verona before becoming a legend at Udinese. In recent seasons, Verona has established itself as a solid Serie A side, often punching above its weight against more financially powerful teams.
