The Italy national football team, known as Nazionale di calcio dell'Italia, represents Italy in international football matches. It is governed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the governing body for football in Italy. The team is a member of UEFA in Europe and FIFA in global competitions. The team's colors, blue and white, are derived from the royal House of Savoy, and they are colloquially referred to as gli Azzurri (the Blues).
Since their first official match in 1910, Italy has established itself as one of the most successful national teams in football history. They have won four FIFA World Cup titles (1934, 1938, 1982, 2006) and two European Championships (1968, 2020). At the World Cup, Italy has also finished as runners-up twice (1970, 1994) and secured a third-place finish once (1990). The team has reached the final of the UEFA European Championship on two other occasions (2000, 2012).
Italy's first World Cup victory came in 1934 when they hosted the tournament, followed by a successful defense of their title in 1938. After a period of decline, they returned to prominence by winning the World Cup in 1982, led by Paolo Rossi. Their fourth title came in 2006, defeating France in a dramatic final that ended in a penalty shootout. The team has produced legendary players such as Giuseppe Meazza, Dino Zoff, Paolo Maldini, and Gianluigi Buffon.
The Azzurri are known for their tactical discipline and defensive prowess, often employing a strong defensive strategy known as catenaccio. This approach has made them a formidable opponent on the international stage. Despite their rich history of success, Italy has faced challenges in recent years, notably failing to qualify for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups. However, they bounced back by winning Euro 2020 (played in 2021), showcasing their resilience and enduring footballing prowess.
Italy has notable rivalries with other footballing nations, such as Germany, Brazil, and France. The team has consistently ranked among the top teams in the FIFA World Rankings, reflecting their status as a football powerhouse. Their passionate fan base and the iconic blue jersey have become synonymous with Italian football culture, inspiring generations of players and supporters alike.
