Japan national football team

Mens national football team.

The Japan national football team (Japanese: サッカー日本代表, Sakkā Nippon Daihyō), also known as Samurai Blue (サムライ・ブルー, Samurai Burū), represents Japan in men's international football. It is governed by the Japan Football Association (JFA), which is a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and FIFA. The team's colors are predominantly blue, reflecting their nickname, and they have become a symbol of Japanese football since the team's professionalization in the early 1990s.

Japan has qualified for seven FIFA World Cups since their debut in 1998, with their best performances occurring in 2002, 2010, 2018, and 2022 when they reached the Round of 16. The team co-hosted the 2002 World Cup with South Korea, marking a significant achievement in their footballing history. Japan has also been highly successful in continental competitions, winning the AFC Asian Cup four times (1992, 2000, 2004, and 2011). They finished as runners-up in the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup and were finalists in the 2019 Asian Cup.

Japan's rise in international football began after the establishment of the J.League in 1993, which helped elevate the sport's profile domestically. The team has developed intense rivalries with South Korea and Australia, reflecting their competitive nature in Asian football. Notable players include Kunishige Kamamoto, Japan's all-time top scorer with 75 goals, and Yasuhito Endō, who holds the record for most caps with 152 appearances.

In recent tournaments, Japan has demonstrated resilience and skill. At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, they achieved a historic victory over Germany and topped their group after defeating Spain. Although they were eliminated by Croatia in the Round of 16 via penalties, Japan's performance was widely praised. As of October 2024, Japan is ranked 15th in the FIFA World Rankings, making them the highest-ranked team from Asia.
