Beerschot Athletic Club, commonly known as Beerschot, is a professional football club based in Antwerp, Belgium. Founded in November 1899 by Alfred Grisar, the club has a rich history that has seen it rise to prominence and experience significant challenges. Beerschot plays its home matches at the historic Olympisch Stadion, which has a capacity of approximately 12,771 spectators.
The club's colors are purple and white, chosen as a tribute to Grisar’s late father. Beerschot quickly established itself in Belgian football, starting in the top division and achieving early success. Their first major achievement came in the 1921-22 season when they won the Belgian championship for the first time. This marked the beginning of a golden era for the club, during which they secured five league titles in seven seasons from 1921 to 1928.
In 1925, Beerschot was granted royal status, becoming Royal Beerschot Athletic Club. The club continued to thrive throughout the 1930s but faced challenges during and after World War II. Despite these setbacks, Beerschot remained competitive and was known for its strong performances in domestic competitions.
However, financial difficulties began to plague the club in the late 20th century. By 1997, Beerschot faced insolvency and was relegated to the lower divisions of Belgian football. The club underwent significant restructuring and re-emerged as Germinal Beerschot Antwerp after merging with another local club, Germinal Ekeren. This new incarnation saw some success, including winning the Belgian Cup in 2005.
Despite this revival, financial instability continued to haunt Beerschot. The club faced bankruptcy again in 2013 and was forced to start anew as KFCO Beerschot Wilrijk, playing in the lower leagues. The merger with KFCO Wilrijk allowed the club to retain its identity while rebuilding from the ground up. As of 2024, Beerschot continues to compete in the Belgian Pro League.
