Leyton Orient Football Club, commonly known as Leyton Orient or simply Orient, is a professional football club based in Leyton, East London. Founded in 1881 as Glyn Cricket Club, the club transitioned to football in 1888 and adopted the name Orient Football Club. Over the years, it has undergone several name changes, including Clapton Orient in 1898 and Leyton Orient in 1946. The nickname "The O's" is derived from the club's original name and is affectionately used by its supporters. The club has a storied history, having been elected to the Football League in 1905. Early on, they struggled to make a significant impact but gradually established themselves as a competitive side. The inter-war years saw them relegated to Division Three (South) in 1929, but they bounced back by winning the division title in the 1955-56 season. This success propelled them into the Second Division, where they made their debut during the 1961-62 season, marking their highest achievement to date.Leyton Orient’s most notable moment came during the 1977-78 FA Cup campaign when they reached the semi-finals, a remarkable feat that showcased their potential on a national stage. The club's rivalry with West Ham United adds an exciting dimension to their fixtures, with matches between the two often characterized by intense competition and passionate support. However, Leyton Orient faced challenges in subsequent decades, including financial instability that led to relegation and struggles within lower divisions. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, the club experienced significant turmoil, culminating in relegation to the Fourth Division (now League Two) in 1995. The situation worsened in the following years as they battled financial difficulties and managerial changes. In 2006, under manager Martin Ling, Leyton Orient achieved promotion back to League One after finishing third in League Two. This marked a turning point for the club as they began to stabilize and build momentum. The following seasons saw them competing effectively within League One, with notable performances that kept fans hopeful for further success. The club's fortunes took another turn when it was sold to Italian businessman Francesco Becchetti in 2014. Unfortunately, his tenure was marked by instability and poor performance on the pitch, leading to multiple managerial changes and relegation from League Two in 2017 after a long-standing association with the Football League that lasted over a century. In November 2017, Leyton Orient appointed former Tottenham Hotspur defender Justin Edinburgh as manager. Under his leadership, the team began to recover from its struggles and secured promotion back into the Football League as champions of the National League in 2019. Tragically, Edinburgh passed away shortly after achieving this success, leaving a lasting legacy at the club.In recent seasons, Leyton Orient has continued to build on its successes. The team secured promotion from League Two during the 2022-23 season under manager Richie Wellens, clinching the title with strong performances throughout the campaign.Leyton Orient plays its home matches at Brisbane Road (also known as The Breyer Group Stadium), which has been their home since 1930. With a capacity of around 9,271, it offers an intimate atmosphere where dedicated supporters create an electric environment during matches.
