Olympique Lyonnais, commonly known as Lyon or OL, is a professional football club based in Lyon, France. Founded in 1950, the club has a rich history and is recognized as one of the most successful teams in French football. The club's colors are red, white, and blue, and its nickname, "Les Gones," translates to "The Kids" in the local Franco-Provençal dialect. Lyon plays its home matches at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais, also known as Groupama Stadium, which has a capacity of approximately 59,186 spectators. This modern stadium opened in 2016 and replaced the historic Stade de Gerland.
Lyon's rise to prominence began in the early 2000s when they established themselves as a dominant force in Ligue 1. The club won an unprecedented seven consecutive league titles from 2002 to 2008, a record that remains unmatched in French football. This period of success was marked by an attacking style of play and the development of homegrown talents such as Karim Benzema and Hatem Ben Arfa. The club also achieved notable success in domestic cup competitions, winning the Coupe de France five times and the Coupe de la Ligue once.
Under the leadership of long-time president Jean-Michel Aulas, who took over in 1987, Lyon underwent significant transformation. Aulas implemented ambitious plans that focused on both sporting success and financial stability. His vision included investing in youth development and enhancing the club's infrastructure. This strategy paid off as Lyon not only dominated French football but also became a regular competitor in European competitions. The club reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League for the first time during the 2009-10 season and again in 2019-20, showcasing its ability to compete on the continental stage.
Lyon's fierce rivalry with AS Saint-Étienne is one of the most intense in French football, known as the Derby Rhône-Alpes. In recent years, while Lyon has faced challenges in maintaining its dominance in Ligue 1 amidst increased competition from clubs like Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco, it continues to be a significant player in French football.
