Oxford United F.C.

English football team.

Oxford United Football Club, commonly known as "The U's," was founded in 1893 as Headington Football Club. The club was established during a meeting at the Britannia Inn in Headington, Oxford, by local doctor Robert Hitchings and the Reverend John Scott-Tucker, who became its first president. Initially, the team played friendly matches and competed in local leagues until they joined the Southern League in 1949, marking their transition to professional football. In 1960, the club changed its name to Oxford United to enhance its profile and represent the city more broadly. This rebranding coincided with a period of growth and success, culminating in their election to the Football League Fourth Division in 1962 after winning the Southern League title. The club quickly progressed through the divisions, achieving promotion to the Third Division in 1965 and then to the Second Division in 1968.The 1980s marked a golden era for Oxford United under manager Jim Smith. The club reached new heights, winning the Third Division title in 1984 and securing promotion to the First Division (now known as the Premier League) in 1985. Their crowning achievement came in 1986 when they won the Football League Cup, defeating Queens Park Rangers 3-0 in a memorable final at Wembley Stadium. This victory remains one of the most significant moments in the club's history and brought national recognition to Oxford United. However, following their success, Oxford faced challenges. Relegation from the top flight occurred in 1988, beginning a long decline that saw them struggle to maintain their status in higher divisions. Financial difficulties compounded these issues, leading to a series of managerial changes and instability within the club. In 2006, Oxford United became the first club to win a major trophy—the League Cup—and subsequently be relegated from the Football League. After several challenging years in lower divisions, including a stint in the Conference, Oxford United began to rebuild. They achieved promotion back to the Football League by winning the Conference Premier play-off final against York City in 2010. The club's resurgence continued as they competed in League Two and eventually secured promotion to League One after finishing second in 2016.Oxford United plays its home matches at Kassam Stadium, which opened in 2001 and has a capacity of approximately 12,500. The stadium is located on Grenoble Road and provides modern facilities for players and fans alike. The move from their previous home at Manor Ground marked a new chapter for the club as they aimed to establish themselves once again among England's competitive teams. The rivalry with Swindon Town is one of Oxford's most intense, known as the A420 derby.
