Qarabag FK, also known as Qarabağ Ağdam, is a professional football club based in Baku, Azerbaijan. Founded in 1951, the club originally hailed from Agdam but was forced to relocate to Baku due to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. Qarabag plays its home matches at the Tofiq Bahramov Republican Stadium, which has a capacity of 31,200 spectators. The club's colors are black and white, and they are nicknamed "The Horsemen."
Despite the challenges of relocation, Qarabag has emerged as the most successful club in Azerbaijani football since the country's independence. They have won the Azerbaijan Premier League a record nine times, including eight consecutive titles from 2014 to 2021. The club has also claimed the Azerbaijan Cup seven times, further cementing their domestic dominance.
Qarabag's rise to prominence has been particularly notable in European competitions. In 2017, they became the first Azerbaijani club to reach the group stage of the UEFA Champions League, a remarkable achievement for a team from a relatively small football nation. Since then, Qarabag has consistently qualified for the group stages of either the UEFA Europa League or the UEFA Europa Conference League, putting Azerbaijani football on the map.
The club's success can be attributed to the long-term vision of its management, led by president Tahir Gozal and the tactical acumen of head coach Gurban Gurbanov, who has been at the helm since 2008. Gurbanov, a former Azerbaijani international player, has overseen the club's transformation into a dominant force domestically and a respected competitor in Europe.
Qarabag's playing style is characterized by technical, possession-based football, often drawing comparisons to some of Europe's top clubs. This approach has not only brought success but has also helped develop numerous players who have gone on to represent Azerbaijan's national team and secure moves to larger European leagues.
