Reading Football Club, commonly known as Reading or simply the Royals, is a professional football club based in Reading, Berkshire, England. Founded in 1871, the club is one of the oldest football institutions in the country. Initially formed as a team for local businessmen and students, Reading has evolved into a significant presence in English football. The nickname "The Royals" reflects the club's location in the Royal County of Berkshire, while "The Biscuitmen" was a nod to the town’s historical association with biscuit manufacturing.Reading began its journey in local leagues before becoming a founding member of the Southern League in 1894. The club turned professional in 1895 and soon after joined the Football League in 1920 when the Third Division was established. Their early years in league football were marked by fluctuating fortunes, but they achieved notable success by winning the Third Division (South) championship in 1926. This success earned them a place in Division Two, where they made their mark by reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in 1927.The post-war years saw Reading continue to compete at various levels of English football. They enjoyed periods of stability and success but also faced relegations that tested their resilience. One of their most significant achievements came during the 1980s when they won the Simod Cup in 1988, defeating Luton Town at Wembley Stadium. This victory marked a high point for the club during a challenging decade. In the late 1990s, Reading experienced a resurgence under new ownership and management. John Madejski became chairman in 1990, injecting ambition and resources into the club. In 1994, Reading moved to their current home, the Madejski Stadium (now known as Select Car Leasing Stadium), which provided a modern venue for fans and players alike. The early 2000s were transformative for Reading; they achieved promotion to the Premier League for the first time in their history at the end of the 2005-06 season after finishing as champions of the Championship. During their debut season in the top flight (2006-07), they finished an impressive eighth, which remains one of their best performances at this level. However, after two seasons in the Premier League, Reading faced relegation back to the Championship. The club continued to oscillate between divisions over subsequent years, experiencing both promotions and relegations. In 2012-13, Reading returned to the Premier League but were relegated after just one season.Throughout its history, Reading has been known for its strong youth academy and commitment to developing local talent. The club has produced several notable players who have gone on to achieve success both domestically and internationally.Reading's home matches at Select Car Leasing Stadium create an intimate atmosphere where dedicated supporters passionately back their team. The fan base is characterized by its loyalty and enthusiasm, often filling the stands regardless of league position. The rivalry with nearby clubs such as Oxford United adds an exciting dynamic to their fixtures.
