Rio Ave Futebol Clube, commonly known as Rio Ave, is a professional football club based in Vila do Conde, Portugal. The club currently competes in the Primeira Liga, the top tier of Portuguese football. Founded in 1939, Rio Ave takes its name from the Ave River, which flows through the town and into the Atlantic Ocean, giving the club a strong connection to its local geography and community.
Rio Ave plays its home matches at the Estádio do Rio Ave, also known as the Estádio dos Arcos. Built in 1985, the stadium has a capacity of approximately 12,815 spectators, providing an intimate atmosphere for the club's passionate supporters. The team's colors are green and white, with their home kit typically featuring green and white striped shirts, while the shorts and socks have historically alternated between green and white.
Throughout its history, Rio Ave has experienced periods of success interspersed with challenges. The club's best finish in the Primeira Liga came in the 1981-82, 2017-18, and 2019-20 seasons, when they achieved fifth place. This consistency in recent years has established Rio Ave as a competitive force in Portuguese football, often challenging the traditional dominance of the country's bigger clubs.
One of the most significant moments in Rio Ave's history came in 1984 when they reached the Taça de Portugal Final. Although they lost 4-1 to Porto, this achievement marked the club's first appearance in a major final. They would reach the final again in 2014, narrowly losing 1-0 to Benfica. This result qualified Rio Ave for the 2014-15 UEFA Europa League, marking their first participation in a major European competition. The club has also been a stepping stone for world-class goalkeepers, with both Jan Oblak and Ederson having played for Rio Ave early in their careers.
In recent years, Rio Ave has continued to punch above its weight in Portuguese football. Under the management of Miguel Cardoso, the club equaled its best-ever finish of fifth place in the 2017-18 season. This feat was repeated in the 2019-20 season under Carlos Carvalhal, with Iranian striker Mehdi Taremi finishing as the league's joint top scorer.
The 2020-21 season proved to be a challenging one for Rio Ave, as they were relegated from the Primeira Liga. However, the club showed remarkable resilience, appointing 35-year-old manager Luís Freire, who led them to an immediate return to the top flight as Segunda Liga champions in the 2021-22 season.
