San Lorenzo de Almagro is a professional football club based in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The club, commonly known as San Lorenzo, plays in the Argentine Primera División, the top tier of Argentine football. San Lorenzo was founded on April 1, 1908, by a group of young men led by Federico Monti and Antonio Scaramusso. The club's name is derived from Father Lorenzo Massa, who allowed the founding members to play on the grounds of his church.
San Lorenzo's nickname is "Los Cuervos" (The Crows), which originates from the black cassocks worn by Catholic priests, in honor of Father Massa. The team's colors are blue and red, typically worn in vertical stripes on their home kit. Their home stadium is the Estadio Pedro Bidegain, also known as "El Nuevo Gasómetro," which has a capacity of approximately 47,000 spectators.
Since joining the Argentine football league system, San Lorenzo has established itself as one of the most successful clubs in Argentina. They have won the Primera División title 15 times, with their first championship coming in 1923. Their most recent league triumph was in the 2013 Inicial tournament. In addition to their domestic success, San Lorenzo has also achieved glory on the international stage.
One of the club's most significant achievements came in 2014 when they won the Copa Libertadores, South America's premier club competition. This victory was particularly sweet for San Lorenzo fans, as it was their first-ever Libertadores title. They defeated Nacional of Paraguay in the final, cementing their place among South America's elite clubs.
San Lorenzo has also won other international titles, including the Supercopa Sudamericana in 2002 and the Copa Mercosur in 2001. These victories have helped establish the club's reputation beyond Argentina's borders.
The club's biggest rivalry is with Huracán, another team from Buenos Aires. This derby, known as the "Clásico del Barrio," is one of the most passionate in Argentine football. San Lorenzo also maintains strong rivalries with other Buenos Aires clubs like Boca Juniors, River Plate, and Independiente.
