Founded in 1886, the club has a long and storied history, with its roots tracing back to the collapse of the Castle Blues team. The nickname "The Shrews" reflects both the town's identity and the club's mascot, which is a shrew.Initially, Shrewsbury Town played in local leagues before joining the Shropshire & District League in 1890. They quickly found success, finishing as runners-up in their inaugural season. In 1895, they were admitted to the Birmingham & District League, where they won their first league championship in 1923. The club's early years were characterized by steady progress and growing popularity within the local community.In 1950, Shrewsbury Town joined the Football League, competing in the Third Division North. Their first major success came in 1958-59 when they gained promotion to the Second Division after finishing as champions.
