St Mirren Football Club is a professional football team based in Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotland. The club, often referred to as "The Buddies," currently competes in the Scottish Premiership, the top tier of Scottish football. St Mirren play their home games at St Mirren Park, also known as the SMISA Stadium for sponsorship reasons, which has been their home since 2009 and has a capacity of 8,023.
Founded in 1877, St Mirren is one of the oldest football clubs in Scotland. The club's name is derived from Saint Mirin, the founder of a medieval church in Paisley. St Mirren's traditional colors are black and white stripes, which have been a key part of their identity throughout their history.
Since their inception, St Mirren have won the Scottish Cup three times, in 1926, 1959, and 1987. Their most recent Scottish Cup victory in 1987, where they defeated Dundee United in the final, remains one of the club's most celebrated achievements. Additionally, St Mirren have won the Scottish League Cup once, in 2013, when they defeated Hearts in the final at Hampden Park.
The club's first major silverware came in 1926 with their Scottish Cup victory, but it was the late 1950s and early 1960s that marked one of St Mirren's most successful periods. Under the management of Willie Reid, the club won the Scottish Cup in 1959 and finished third in the league in 1961, their highest-ever league position.
St Mirren have participated in European competitions on several occasions, with their most notable run coming in the 1987-88 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. They reached the second round of the competition before being eliminated by Belgian side KV Mechelen, who went on to win the tournament.
Throughout their history, St Mirren have experienced various ups and downs, including periods in the lower divisions of Scottish football. However, they have shown resilience in returning to the top flight and establishing themselves as a competitive force in Scottish football.
The club has a strong local rivalry with Greenock Morton, with whom they contest the Renfrewshire derby.
