Stevenage Football Club, commonly referred to as Stevenage or simply Boro, is a professional football club based in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. Founded in 1976 following the dissolution of the town's previous club, Stevenage Athletic, the club has established itself as a significant entity in English football. Initially known as Stevenage Borough, the club adopted its current name in 2010. They play their home games at the Lamex Stadium, which has a capacity of approximately 6,722.The club's journey began in the United Counties League in 1980, where they quickly found success by winning the Division One title and the League Cup in their first season. This early achievement set a precedent for future successes. Over the next few years, Stevenage continued to rise through the ranks, joining the Isthmian League in 1984 and securing promotions that would eventually lead them to the Conference National (now National League) by 1994.In 1996-97, Stevenage reached the FA Cup Third Round for the first time, marking a significant milestone in their history. However, it was during the early 2000s that the club truly began to make waves. Under manager Graham Westley, they reached the play-offs of the Conference in 2005 but fell short of promotion. The following seasons saw continued progress, culminating in a successful campaign during the 2009-10 season when they won the Conference Premier title and secured promotion to the Football League for the first time.Stevenage made an immediate impact in League Two during their debut season (2010-11), finishing sixth and reaching the play-offs. They faced Torquay United in the play-off final at Old Trafford and emerged victorious with a 1-0 win, achieving back-to-back promotions into League One. This was a remarkable achievement for a club that had only recently been competing in non-league football. In their first season in League One (2011-12), Stevenage performed admirably, finishing in mid-table and reaching the Fifth Round of the FA Cup for the first time in their history. They faced Tottenham Hotspur but were narrowly defeated after a replay. However, subsequent seasons saw fluctuating fortunes as they battled relegation and stability within the league. The club’s management saw changes over time, with several managerial appointments aimed at restoring competitiveness. In recent years, Stevenage has focused on rebuilding and developing young talent through its academy system while maintaining a strong connection with its local community. The Lamex Stadium provides an intimate atmosphere for fans who are known for their unwavering support. The stadium has undergone renovations to enhance facilities for both players and supporters alike. Stevenage has regional rivalries with clubs such as Luton Town and Barnet.
