Stirling Albion Football Club, affectionately known as The Binos, is a Scottish football club based in the city of Stirling. Founded in 1945 following the demise of King's Park after World War II, Stirling Albion has since become an integral part of Scottish football history. The club currently competes in Scottish League Two, which is the fourth tier of the Scottish Professional Football League system.
Stirling Albion's highest league position came in the 1958–59 season when they finished 12th in the top flight of Scottish football. Throughout their history, the club has achieved notable success in the league, winning the second tier of Scottish football on four occasions, with their last triumph coming in the 1964–65 season. In recent years, Stirling Albion has primarily competed in the third or fourth tier following league reconstructions in 1975 and 1994.
The club's origins can be traced back to the aftermath of World War II when local businessman Thomas Fergusson, a coal magnate, established Stirling Albion to fill the void left by King's Park's demise. Fergusson purchased the Annfield estate to build a new stadium, which would serve as the Binos' home until 1992. The club's early years were marked by steady progress and growth.
One of the most significant periods in Stirling Albion's history came under the management of Allan Moore in the early 2000s. Moore led the club to promotion to the Second Division at the end of the 2003–04 season, followed by a respectable fourth-place finish the following year. The 2005–06 season saw further improvement, with the club narrowly missing out on the newly introduced play-off system.
The 2006–07 season proved to be a landmark year for Stirling Albion. The club went on an impressive 18-game unbeaten run, which propelled them to a second-place finish in the Second Division. This success earned them a place in the play-offs for promotion to the Scottish First Division. In a thrilling play-off final, Stirling Albion secured a 3-0 victory over Airdrie United, with Robert Snodgrass scoring two goals and Stewart Devine adding a third. This triumph marked the club's return to the First Division after nearly a decade of absence.
However, Stirling Albion's stay in the First Division was short-lived. As the only part-time team in the league, they struggled to compete and were ultimately relegated at the end of the season. Despite this setback, the club showed resilience and determination to bounce back.
In a remarkable turn of events during the 2009–10 season, Stirling Albion mounted a late charge for promotion. With eight games compressed into the final 21 days of the season, the team found their form and closed the gap on long-time leaders Alloa Athletic. In a dramatic finale, Stirling Albion regained top spot on the penultimate weekend of the campaign and secured the divisional title with a draw against Brechin City on the final day. This triumph marked their first divisional title in nearly 15 years.
Off the pitch, Stirling Albion made history in 2010 when they became the first Scottish League club to be 100% owned by a fans trust. This transition occurred when chairman Peter McKenzie agreed to sell his majority shareholding to the Stirling Albion Supporters Trust, marking the successful conclusion of the BuyStirlingAlbion campaign launched in May 2009.
Today, Stirling Albion continues to be an important part of Scottish football, with a dedicated fan base and a commitment to community involvement. The club plays its home games at Forthbank Stadium, which has been their home since 1993.
