The Turkey national football team (Turkish: Türkiye Millî Futbol Takımı) represents Turkey in men's international football matches. It is governed by the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), which was founded in 1923 and has been a member of FIFA since the same year and UEFA since 1962. The team is commonly referred to as Ay-Yıldızlılar (The Crescent-Stars) and has a passionate following.
Turkey played its first official international match on October 26, 1923, against Romania, ending in a 2-2 draw. The team has participated in six Summer Olympics, reaching the quarter-finals in 1948 and 1952. They qualified for the FIFA World Cup twice, with their best performance coming in 2002 when they finished third. In that tournament, Turkey defeated co-hosts South Korea 3-2 in the third-place match, with Hakan Şükür scoring the fastest goal in World Cup history just 10.8 seconds into the game.
In addition to their World Cup success, Turkey has qualified for the UEFA European Championship six times since their debut in 1996. Their best result came in 2008 when they reached the semi-finals, where they lost to Germany. The team also enjoyed notable achievements in the early 2000s, finishing third at the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2003 and qualifying for Euro 2016 and Euro 2020.
Despite experiencing ups and downs over the decades, including failing to qualify for several major tournaments, Turkey has produced many talented players such as Hakan Şükür, Rüştü Reçber, and more recently, Hakan Çalhanoğlu. As of October 2024, Turkey is ranked 26th in the FIFA World Rankings.
The team's colors are red and white, reflecting their national identity. Under head coach Vincenzo Montella, Turkey aims to build on its footballing heritage and achieve further success on both European and global stages. They have been named co-hosts for UEFA Euro 2032, which will provide an opportunity to showcase their footballing culture on a grand scale.
